Ladies and Gentlemen,

There is an old Chinese proverb: when we drink the water, we should not forget those who dug the well. And that is why we are hosting this dinner tonight to present special commemorative awards of friendship to the distinguished guests who have made outstanding contributions to the China-Malaysia Friendship in a bid to express our sincere appreciations and pay our highest respect.

The friendship between China and Malaysia has a long history and, becoming stronger as time passes by. Our friendship can be traced back to as far as the Chinese Tang and Song Dynasties when the maritime silk road was built, till the Ming Dynasty when Admiral Zheng He visited Melaka during his famous voyages to the Western Ocean, till the modern times when the China and Malaysia jointly combat the colonialism and foreign invasion.

40 years ago, Malaysia made the strategic choice to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, opening a new chapter for China-Malaysia relationship. Since then, China-Malaysia relations have gone through all the challenges and difficulties and reached a new height. At present, our bilateral relationship enjoys the best time in history.

The accomplishments we have made can be attributed to the following factors.

First, the political mutual trust between China and Malaysia has been increasingly enhanced. The leaders of our two countries visit each other frequently. China and Malaysia both consider each other as trustworthy friends and reliable partners, firmly pursue the good neighborliness and friendship policy and support each other in important international and regional affairs.

Second, the mutually-benefiting cooperation between China and Malaysia has been deepened. During the past 40 years, the trade volume between China and Malaysia has grown from less than 200 million US dollars to over 100 billion US dollars. China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 5 consecutive years and Malaysia has been China’s largest trading partner in ASEAN for 6 consecutive years. The twin industrial parks in Qinzhou and Kuantan are considered as a new model for cooperation between China and ASEAN countries. The bilateral cooperation in all other fields has also taken the lead in cooperation between China and ASEAN countries.

Third, China and Malaysia have stood together and helped each other in tough times. We have jointly faced many challenges, from the Asia financial crisis in 1997 to China’s Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, from the Floods in Malaysia’s Eastern Coast in the 1970’s to the incident of MH370 this year. The two countries have helped and supported each other and managed to overcome the difficulties together.

Fourth, the development of friendship between China and Malaysia is deeply rooted among our people. Exchanges in the fields of culture, education, youth, sports, tourism, think tanks and media have strengthened the traditional friendship between the two peoples and cultivated the seed of friendship into the heart of everyone.

We will not forget, in the period of anti-Japanese war, over 3000 mechanics from the Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia transported military supplies to the frontier crossing the hail of bullets, and made important contribution to the victory of the war;

We will not forget, in the times when the world was clouded by the Cold War, then Prime Minster Tun Razak, taking a broad and long-term view, paid his ice-breaking visit to China, removed obstacles together with the Chinese leaders, reconnected the bonds for the two friendly neighbors and made the bilateral ties a model of friendly cooperation in the region;

We will not forget, many friends seated here once made their utmost efforts both on and off the scene for the establishment of the diplomatic relations and maintenance of friendship and cooperation between our two countries;

We will not forget, when the Chinese people were hit by Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 and other heavy natural disasters, the Malaysian people made donations generously, comforting the Chinese people with their encouraging faces and warm words;

We will not forget either, a Malaysian student studying in China volunteered to donate his hematopoietic stem cells and saved the life of a 7 year old Chinese girl who was struck by leukemia. In this context, I would also like to take this opportunity to announce that with the special permission of the Chinese government, Mr. Abdul Jalil Ibrahim, the 24 year old prince and the third son of the Johor Sultan, had a successful liver transplant operation in Guangzhou on 10th December. Now his situation is stable. Let’s give our best wishes to the prince and hope that he will recover soon. These facts speak loudly again for the close friendship and the deep brotherhood between our two peoples.

For so many years, you have been traveling relentlessly between China and Malaysia for the growth of bilateral trade and investment or as friendly messengers in culture, education, sports and other fields, greatly promoting people to people exchanges.

From the government to the civil society, from the parliament to the communities, from the political parties to the individuals, countless people have formed the inexhaustible source of power for China-Malaysia friendship. It is the strength of these people that has converged little by little into the overwhelming historical tide of ever-lasting friendship between China and Malaysia. You are the greatest strength and most reliable supporter for the China-Malaysia friendship. Your remarkable feat will be remembered forever by history.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Confucius said, “At the age of thirty, one should be independent; At the age of forty, one no longer has doubts and misgivings.” China-Malaysia relations have demonstrated booming vitality and strong power in the last 40 years and entered comprehensive, stable and pragmatic development. The seeds sowed by the leaders in those years have grown into a flourishing tree which has blossomed and yielded fruits.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations, China and Malaysia have held a serial of commemorative events. His Excellency Mr. Xi Jinping, President of China, and His Majesty Abdul Halim, Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia exchanged congratulation letters on 31st May. Yang di-Pertuan Agong paid a state visit to China in September. In May, Prime Minister Najib came to China for his “momentous and historic” journey. During his visit, an important consensus was reached, and at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where Premier Zhou Enlai and Prime Minister Abdul Razak signed the China-Malaysia Joint Communiqué to establish diplomatic relations exactly 40 years ago, the Joint Communiqué of the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Diplomatic Relationship between China and Malaysia was signed. This visit has become a new milestone in our bilateral relationship. Prime Minister Najib also went to Beijing to attend the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in November. Besides, Deputy Prime Minster Muhyiddin and over 10 government ministers also visited China this year.

From the Chinese side, Mr. Hu Chunhua, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Mr. Yang Jiechi, the State Councilor, and Mr. Chen Xiaoguang, Vice chairman of the CPPCC visited Malaysia. The Third China-Malaysia Strategic Consultation was held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

We held seminars, receptions and picture exhibitions in commemoration of the 40th anniversary. A pair of Chinese pandas arrived and settled down in Kuala Lumpur and received warm welcome from the Malaysian people. The Chinese Consulate Generals in KK and Penang will be opened in the near future. The Malaysian Consulate General in Nanning is also in active preparation. Over 100 Malaysian youth visited China and over 100 young Chinese visited Malaysia. Several Chinese arts troupes gave performances in Malaysia. Many friendly communities and institutions held various commemorative events in Malaysia.

These wonderful events have fully demonstrated the distinct achievements by our two countries in the “Golden 40 Years” of China-Malaysia relationship.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Now, we are setting sails with the fair wind. China is willing to, together with Malaysia, combine properly the exchanges and cooperation between our two countries with our respective development strategies to continue yielding rich fruits in the next 40 years and to benefit our two peoples in better ways.

Let’s join our efforts to enhance further strategic mutual trust between China and Malaysia, to strengthen communication and coordination on major issues, and to consolidate the political founding of the bilateral relations;

Let’s join our efforts to continuously tap mutually-benefiting cooperation, to elevate the level of our cooperation in economy, trade, investment, finance, education and law-enforcement, and to reinforce the bond between our two countries;

Let’s join our efforts to promote further cultural exchange, to encourage and facilitate non-governmental exchanges and communication, to narrow the distance between the hearts of the two peoples, and to lay a firmer and all-weather social foundation for China-Malaysia friendship;

Let’s join our efforts to increase broader regional cooperation, to build an Asian Community of Common Destiny with shared interests and shared responsibilities, and to create a better future for the Asia-Pacific region.

We are fully confident on the future of the bilateral relationship. China and Malaysia will definitely embrace a mutually-beneficial and win-win “Diamond 40 Years” with prosperity and development for both countries.

Today we will present a special commemorative award to every China-Malaysia “Star of Friendship”. Of course, such a small award is far from enough to express our gratitude and respect for you. But like a Chinese old saying, “It’s not the gift that counts, but the thought behind it .” I hope that all of you will continue to support the development of China-Malaysia relationship and to commit yourselves to the friendship of the two countries and the two peoples.

Let’s join our hands to contribute to China-Malaysia friendship in the next 40 years, 80 years, and more years to come, and forever.

Terima Kasih!

Thank you!
